Genghis Tron: Dream Weapon (Relapse) LPBlue vinyl! Collaborating with local instrument builder / ceramist Seth Sutton, the pair drench a set of balafon pieces in heavy tape delay and reverb pedals, recalling the ethno-percussion trips led by Futuro Antico, whereas ‘Keld’ (featuring renown Cellist Abel Selaocoe) sinks skimming, minimal flute notes into pacifying polyrhythms and stark plucked improvisations that edge towards something more spiritual. Walter “Junie” Morrison released his third solo LP, Suzie Super Groupie, in 1976. Her voice is beautiful. New York-based multi-instrumentalist/producer/film composer Steve Moore is probably best known for his synthesizer and bass guitar work as Zombi, together with Anthony Paterra. Oft-bootlegged, with original copies commanding princely sums, New Direction, while a fairly straight-ahead piano trio outing, sets the tone for the entire label with its modal and soul jazz flourishes, and features such sidemen as double bassist Henry “The Skipper” Franklin and drummer Steve Clover. The Sharrock vein continues with ‘How to Cook a Wolf,’ its Blind Willie-esque melodic simplicity and repetition extrapolated 360-style in a repetitive descending riff that falls into Cippolina-isms (by way of Verlaine) until the end crashes upon the shore. Though that plan never came to fruition then, 20 years later, Shadow became a lynchpin of the curated collaboration roster that Deftones assembled for Black Stallion. But of course, they don‘t stray away from their metal roots, especially influenced by underground metal bands like Bathory on tracks like the bombastic and epic metal anthem “The Hermit Saints.” Hermitage is a revolutionary, wonderfully intuitive and epic journey by one of the most distinctive dark metal bands of all time, and a testament to what they’ve always loved the most: Honest, emotional metal that binds us even in the darkest times. Particularly on the Sabbath side of the equation: The guitars are heavier and more blues-based than before, but the ancient rhythmic formula of the clave remains a constant. Naomi Lewis: Cottage Songs (Mapache) LPBack in 1975, singer-songwriter Naomi Lewis entered the studio to record her first album, Cottage Songs. “My wife, Eva, became pregnant not long after we started working on the song and after hearing an early version she said, ‘I wish this song was dancier’. The cover is printed on special silver coated paper stock to create the desired effect. The album’s cover, front and back, showcases artwork by Japanese photographer Hiroshi Hamaya and design by Benjamin Tousley with Robin Pecknold. For this album, Murphy collaborated with keyboardist Paul Statham (of B-Movie). This 16-track compilation features three previously unreleased versions of classic Clash tracks, including the never-before-heard “Junco Partner (Acoustic)” and electrifying live performances of “Rudie Can’t Fail” and “I Fought The Law,” the latter two of which were recorded by Strummer and the Mescaleros at London’s Brixton Academy on November 24, 2001. Imagine if that evening’s readings been recorded! Junie made his name as the lead singer and keyboardist of the Ohio Players. Indian filmmakers and composers quickly fell under the spell of these instruments and sounds and made them suitable for playing ragas — the melodic patterns and modes in traditional Indian compositions. Produced by PJ Harvey with Rob Ellis and Mick Harvey, and originally released in October 2000, Stories From The City, Stories From The Sea features the singles “Good Fortune”, “A Place Called Home” and “This Is Love” and includes a duet with Radiohead’s Thom Yorke on “This Mess We’re In.” Widely recognized as a career best, with NME declaring it to be “a magnificent, life-affirming opus,” the album won the Mercury Music Prize in 2001. The seed for Black Stallion was planted back in 2000 while writing and recording White Pony, which ended up going platinum and earning a 2001 Grammy for Best Metal Performance. Soon these hot-rod guitars were accepted as legitimate instruments for performing Indian classical music, and a new breed of virtuosos emerged to write yet another chapter of the guitar’s unpredictable evolution. I was listening to a lot of Thin Lizzy, so I was trying to get some of that duelling twin lead sound. Debut album World Vision Perfect Harmony follows a decade of collaborations starting with The Body and Braveyoung’s Nothing Passes. Finally, we could open to the next stage to break old customs since 1995”. Discos Fuentes was founded in Cartagena in 1934 by the visionary musician, arranger and producer, Antonio Lopez Fuentes. Similarly, Prurient returns with a side parallax-view vocal barrage complimentary to Moran’s fractal modes. 21-year-old Lutendo Raduvha has spent the bulk of his life moving between different townships on the outskirts of Johannesburg and Pretoria in the Gauteng province. The pioneers may no longer be with us, but their saintly selves loom large, shining a light in the darkness, inspiring many a brave new disciple today, as this album will testify: the new wave of jazz is gathering pace and still sounds fresh, vibrant and as relevant as ever. “Too many pieces of music finish too long after the end,” the Russian composer was quoted as saying and here is Gilson offering us… six!
