Men’s 2018 Eyewear Guide – Time to unleash your inner pilot

As many of us are still dealing with Jack Frost it might be hard to think about Spring and Summer eye wear but nothing slows down the fashion train and we’ve begun to see the trending styles in men’s sunglasses for 2017 and if we had to give it a theme, it may be time for you to break out your inner “Maverick” as the Aviator frames are trending to make a strong showing this year.

The Tom Ford Marko Aviator $399 is our top pick

It’s not as if men’s Aviators ever really went OUT of style, as you would always catch some A-Listers sporting them on the red carpet but they haven’t been considered “hip” for a few years now but they are back, as often the case with a few moderations, and in a big way as most vendors have a style or two that is among their top sellers. Here are some of our favorite Aviators from each line for those so inclined to fell the need for speed.

Now there are a few caveats that you need to consider before you put on your bomber jacket. Firstly, when choosing Aviators or any other sunglasses, make sure they fit your face and you can do that by following a few simple rules:

     1. Sunglasses should not touch your cheekbones

     2. Sunglasses should sit comfortably on the bridge of your nose

     3. You should still be able to see your eyebrows when viewing in a mirror

     4. You should not be able to fit more than one finger between the outside of your temples and the inside of the sunglasses

It is pure bias as this is my current choice for eye wear but my favorite among all of the all-stars are the Tom Ford Aviators. Classic lines, great lenses that are more sturdy than your would think. I have often taken them off and hung them on the collar of my shirt and despite wearing a zipper or a wool coat they have remained scratch free.

persol aviator

The Persol Aviator $246

The Persol Aviator has a sleek frame and great lines. It could be the best on this list to wear with a suit as its subtle sophistication is on point with everything from grey flannel to jeans and a blazer. Persol is a brand that marries culture of excellence and attention paid to details to create a perfect alchemy between aesthetics and technology.

oliver peoples aviatorsEveryone broke the first and second rule of Fight club when Tyler Durden sported a pair of wine colored aviators by Oliver Peoples. They became the year’s “Must Have” and they’re back and fighting mad in 2017. The lenses are a little darker but the signature wire frames are carrying on the legend.

gucci aviators

The Gucci Aviator Gold/White w/top bar $267

Sticking with the brown theme the Gucci has a very elegant version of the Aviator style that is has a bridge that made be a little wider than other styles but at the same time is comprised of very thin metal so you don’t even know it’s there. The side arms are slightly wider near the lenses to give them a masculine look but not distracting to the eye.

carerra black

The Carerra black on black retailing for $128 if you can find them in stock

One style that has been on the upswing for quite some time is the Carrera Aviator. It’s “Capital I” lens frames give it a very unique look, and it’s black on black silhouette is perfectly suited for those looking for that bad boy look. The frames are slightly more forgiving than most, so they can reshaped to give you a better fit. They also allow you to hold them on your collar or hanging backwards without fear of permanently losing their shape in the event of a pinch. The price point is a little lower than the others on our list, but don’t be fooled they look on par with other twice their price. Because of their casual shape they travel well, either to the beach or for a sunset dinner. If you’re still on the fence about these, just try to find a vendor that isn’t out of stock.
